Password Best Practices

The security of any network is only as strong as the weakest password.

When selecting a password:

  • Do Not use common (a.k.a. dictionary) words
  • Do Not use common words spelled backwards
  • Do Not use names of a child, pet, spouse, etc.
  • Do Not use common numbers social security numbers, birth dates, etc.
  • Do Not use a “pattern” of letters or numbers which follow the keyboard in any direction (e.g. 1234, asdf)
  • Do Not use the same password for every account
  • Do mix UPPER and lowercase letters
  • Do use a mixture of numbers, letters, and punctuation when allowed.
  • Do use a password with 8 or more character.

Here is a simple way to generate passwords, which meet most of the above guidelines and are easy to remember.

  1. Pick an easy to remember word or words (e.g. dinosaur, RedRock, etc.)
  2. On the keyboard transpose each letter one row up.

For example:

“Dinosaur” would become “E8h9wq74”

“RedRock” would become $3e$9di

This is commonly referred to as the “Blum Encryption Algorithm”

Android Passes iPhone In US Market Share

Comments Off on Android Passes iPhone In US Market Share

In the spring of 2010 we saw evidence that the Android mobile market was growing faster than the iPhone.  This morning we saw this headline on slashdot.

In our opinion the Android is an excellent platform.  It is very strong in SMS messaging and of course integration with Google web services.  We are particularly impressed with the current version of the Google map service.  However, our testers have found the email messaging service not as strong as the iPhone or the Blackberry.

Periodic review of Facebook privacy settings

As a best practice we recommend that you periodically review the privacy settings on your Facebook account.  Facebook originally had a decent policy and approach to privacy, but over time Facebook has changed these policies sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worst.  We typically find out about this stuff pretty quickly, but as a best practice we recommend that people review the privacy settings of their Facebook accounts on a periodic basis.  In particular we suggest a reviewing any applications installed on your Facebook account.  Remove any unused or unknown applications and check what actions those applications are allowed to do.

Xobni

Xobni is an Outlook plugin.  Xobni provides several enhancement to Outlook including enhanced searching, threaded conversations and links to social networks.  As a general rule we do not encourage our clients to load extra plugins or add-ons to Outlook, because they often create conflicts and issues, but we have several heavy email reliant clients who are using Xobni, so we decided to give it a try ourselves.

One of the features we really like a lot in our office is Xobni’s ability to lookup email address from your contacts/address book directly from the “To” or “CC” line of an email.  Outlook provides similar functionality, but Xobni’s lookup searches your address book (Outlook searches a separate cache of recently used emails addresses).  The result is the Xobni find the email addresses you are looking more often.  We have found this to be a big boost to productivity.

Initially, we were not that interested in Xobni’s ability to link to social networks, but we are finding this functionality also quite useful especially when dealing with a new contact whom we have not meet face to face yet.

You can download the plugin from www.xobni.com
